Painted Rocks

Everyone knows that I'm not much of a gardener. Really...I just don't care enough about putting time, money and effort into the hobby of gardening. The entry to our home has some roses and other flowers, but it's nothing exceptional. So, to add a little more interest (that won't die), several years ago I had the kids paint the rocks that line the walkway. It was a fun project; we had several of the kids' friends over, broke out the acrylic paints and told them to paint their imagination. It was wonderful, and even on the dreariest of winter days, the painted rocks made me smile each time I walked by.

The years have passed and the paint has faded, chipped and is now only a memory of that painting day. Yesterday, it was sunny and warm and the kids were bored, so I suggested painting rocks again. They are older now, and not as enthusiastic as they once were, but at least Tay got into it (he's ten and still likes to hang out with Mom with paint). Morgan painted a few, but I couldn't get Alex to participate at all *sigh*...he was busy working on his bikes. He did say that he liked the finished rocks, though.

When I was a kid, I would coerce my friends to paint things, too. Rocks, actually, and sand dollars carefully brought home from the beach. We would stand at the curb and hawk our wares, "Rocks for sale!" and go door-to-door selling the painted sand dollars. My parents still chuckle about this...we made some pretty good money, actually! Well, for kids, anyway...

Sometimes it's a slow start, but once the imagination gets goin', you can come up with quite a few ideas and designs. There is just something comforting about painting, even if it is as primitive as painting rocks.

That is too cool! If I show this to the boys, you can only guess how they're going to want to spend tomorrow afternoon! ;-)

I am slightly jealous of your rocks. We don't have rocks. We have sand. If we want rocks, we have to buy them. Send me rocks! :)
